Navarre Beach Overview
Navarre beach is located in the panhandle of Florida on the “Emerald Coast”. Destin, Okaloosa Island and Pensacola Beach may be better known in the region, but Navarre Beach offers the same glorious sun, sand, and water in a quiet, less developed environment.
Navarre Beach is located in Santa Rosa County. The population of Santa Rosa County is 145,000 and the county has enjoyed a growth at a faster rate than the state, yet still has a density significantly lower than the state in general.
Navarre Beach is located on 48 Mile Santa Rosa Island, which is bordered to the west by Ft Pickens and to the east by Destin Pass. The island is especially noted for its fine white sand which is believed to have flowed from the north through the many rivers in the region. The island is largely undeveloped with the exception of Pensacola Beach, Navarre Beach and Okaloosa Island.
An Oasis bordered by Two Parks
Navarre Beach itself is about 4 miles long. It is bordered to the west by the Gulf National Seashore Park. This is the largest National Seashore Park in the United States encompassing over 160 miles and 12 separate park units.
To the east, Navarre Beach is bordered by Navarre Beach State Park. Plans are for the state to convey the park to Santa Rosa County. In addition there are plans for a new fishing pier and many new improvements.
Navarre beach is accessed by the Navarre Causeway Bridge. This single access point limits much beach traffic and caters to Navarre Beach’s reputation as the quiet and laid back spot on the Emerald Coast. However, State Road 399 (Gulf Blvd) to Pensacola Beach is expected to be re-opened by 2008. This 11 mile drive parallels the gulf and meanders through the Gulf National Seashore Park. It is truly a breathtaking drive.
A Beach Community is Reborn
Navarre Beach had been spared a major hurricane since Opel in 1993. However the record breaking seasons of 2004/2005 took their toll on the beach. Hurricane Ivan’s full force was felt, inflicting considerable damage.
However, Navarre Beach quickly rebuilt, better, stronger and more beautiful than before. Navarre Beach is now ostensibly new with new infrastructure; water, sewer, electric and cable, upgraded and new buildings, as well as a new fire station and bike path.
The beach was totally re-nourished in 2006 with replenishment and enlargement of the beach, creation of a new 14 foot dune line and 12 new beach crossovers. Long term owners claim the beach is the best condition in over 15 years.
